Letters and documents collected by Engstler include business correspondence from H.W. Johns Manufacturing Company, New York City to agent J. Arthur Johnston, Petersburg, Va., 1890-1892, furnishing advice on conducting business and making reports. Letters, 1857-1859, from Merchants' and Mechanics' Bank, Wheeling, W. Va. and Bailey Brown & Company, Pittsburgh, Pa., to Henry T. Kirtland, Poland, Oh., concern his business affairs. Miscellaneous personal correspondence, 1875-1902, includes letters to Lizzie Henry, Vicksburg, from friends "Annie" in school at St. Mary's [Raleigh?] and New Orleans, and "Hannah Maria" and "Nancy Jane" at Warm Springs, [N.C.?], describing their activities. Letters from Alice Lyell, New York, N.Y., to "Josie," Petersburg, Va., convey family news and travel plans. The collection also contains a form letter, 1920 December 3, from Louis R. Wilson, University of North Carolina to S.E. Matthews, soliciting money for a student activities building; and a letter, 1902, conveying family and church news to family in Virginia from an unidentified place in Texas.
